Imphal City, the State Capital is the nodal functional centre of this District. The district is surrounded by Senapati District on the north, on the east by Imphal East and Thoubal districts, on the south by Thoubal and Bishnupur Districts, and on the west by Senapati and Bishnupur Districts. It is situated between latitude 24.30º N to 25.00º N and Longitude 93.45o E to 94.15o E. Total area of the district is 558 sq. km. The district comprises of 4 Subdivisions and 2 CD Blocks. The places of tourist interests in the district are Shree Shree Govindajee Temple, Women's market or Ima keithel, War Cemeteries, Manipur Zoological Gardens, and Manipur State Museum.
