About District

The district of Karaikal bears relics to the rich historical ancestry and traditional legacy. The district is embedded in the Nagappattinam and Tiruvarur Districts of Tamil Nadu State. The Latitude lies between 10o 49' and 11o 01' northern latitude about 150 kms. The Longitude lies between 79 o 43' and 79o52' eastern longitude about 150 kms. The total geographical area of the district is 161 sq. km. has a population of 2,00,222 as per the census 2011. Karaikal region/district is made up of one Municipality and five Commune panchayats viz. Karaikal, Kottuchcheri, Nedungadu, Tirunallar, Niravi and Tirumalarajanpattinam respectively. In addition Karaikal has earmarked the area of Polagam as an important industrial hub of the district. Endowed with natural scenic beauty and rich religious history, Karaikal is blessed with numerous places of tourist interest. Some of the notable places of tourist interest are Ammaiyar Thirukulam, Karaikal Ammaiyar Temple, Sri Nithyakalyanaperumal Temple, Sri Kalilasanathar Temple, Lord Saneeswara Temple, and Karaikal Beach etc.
