About District

In 1910, Ramanathapuram was formed by clubbing portions from Madurai and Tirunelveli district. During the British period this district was called “Ramnad”. The name continued after independence. Later the district was renamed as Ramanathapuram to be in conformity with the Tamil Name for this region. The Geographical area of the district is 4175 Sq.Km. which lies between 09 05` and 09 50` North Latitute and 78 10` and 79 27` East Longitude. For Administrative pruposes the district has been divided into 2 Revenue Divisions, 7 Taluks, 38 Firkas and 400 Revenue Villages . For local arrangements, the district has been divided into 4 Municipalities, 11 Panchayat Unions and 429 Village Panchayats. The Rameswaram Ramanatha Samy Temple, Ramanathapuram, Gandhamathana Parvatham, Devipattinam - Navashabashanam, Uthirakosaimangai, Thiruvottriyur, Thirupullani, Erwadi - tomb of Sultan Ibrahim Syed Aulia, Oriyur - St. John De Britto Shrine, Dhanushkodi, Mandapam & Pamban - The Indira Gandhi (Pamban) Bridge, Kurusadai Island, Sethu Karai and Sea World Aquarium, Rameswaram are some of the important places in the District to visit.
