About District

Tiruchirappalli District is located centrally in Tamil Nadu and it is surrounded by Perambalur district on the north, Thanjavur district on the east, Pudukkottai and Dindigul districts on the south and Karur district on the west. The district has an area of 4403.83 Sq. Kms. The most famous landmark of Trichy is the Rockfort temple which is perched on a huge rocky out crop, 83 metres in height, from where one can enjoy a panoramic view of Tiruchirapalli. This smooth crop was first hewn by the Pallavas but it was the Nayak’s of Madurai who later built the Rock fort temple, which was also used as their military fort. Hence Trichy is also called as Rock City. Tiruchirappalli is an important industrial and educational hub of central Tamil Nadu. The factories of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Golden Rock Railway Workshops, Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli (OFT) and Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project (HAPP) are located in Tiruchirappalli. The Anna University of Technology, Bharathidasan University, Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), National Institutes of Technology (NIT), and Tamil Nadu National Law School have their campuses in the city. The district is renowned for fabrication industry, Gem Cutting, Korai Mat Weaving and Readymade Garments.
